Chapter 25
That evening I went to the library to return the book Iâd borrowed and search for one on the history of Lyrica. Lord Obi wasnât there, so I found the bookâs place myself and went meandering through the aisles. I reached the end of one and was about to turn up the other when I bumped into Pedr Tore.
âIâm so sorry,â I said while bending to help him gather the books heâd been holding in his arms.
âPlease donât apologize. I wasnât paying attention.â Pedr interrupted.
We stood for a moment, unsure of what to say next.
âSo⦠I heard you made fools of the Lyon brothers. I applaud you for it.â Pedr said after an awkward moment.
Startled, I checked to make sure no one else was present. âIf I could do it over again, I wouldnât have interfered.â
Pedr shrugged as if he wasnât concerned with the consequences of my actions. âIs there anything I can help you find?â
âIâm just looking for a book on Lyricaâs history.â
âOh, here, I grabbed one for myself.â He said, handing me a book from his stack with a friendly smile.
âThank you,â I replied, touched at his chivalry.
âItâs no worry. By the way, donât listen to what the others say. I think itâs admirable of you to do weapons training. If you need any help, feel free to ask. Although, from the looks of it, you could probably teach me a thing or two.â he chuckled.
âIâve been training with weapons ever since I could hold one. My father told anyone who would listen about the day that Iâd gripped an arrow as a toddler. He tried to take it from my hands, but I kicked up such a fuss that he just let me be. Ever since then, he would bring me to train with the other warriors of the clan.â I said as we walked back to a table where Pedr deposited his mountain of books.
âI havenât had much training myself. Livian is a center for the arts, not warfare. I can play the lute really well, but nobody seems to care much for the arts here. They think of it as womenâs craft.â He sighed.
âIâd love to hear you play sometime. We didnât have much music in Espiria.â
âReally? I can get it now if you want. Nobody comes to the library in the evenings, so we wouldnât be disturbed.â
âIâd be honored,â I answered with a smile.
âWait here, Iâll be right back.â
I sat down at the table and flipped through the book heâd lent me, patiently waiting until Pedr came sliding back, this time with a lute in his hand.
âIâll need to tune it a bit, itâs been a while.â He said, sitting at the table and plucking at the strings.
âTake your time.â I didnât have any more classes for the day, and Ally wouldnât mind missing one evening ride around the grounds.
After Pedr was satisfied, he began to play, his fingers dancing across the instrument while he sang.
It was a mournful ballad about a girl who had fallen in love with a musician.
